Mini Update

Classic Star

I recently had the honor and pleasure of being invited to ride and learn from Walter Zettl at a clinic again.  I also audited a clinic not long after that.  Thank you to Mr. Zettl for offering your 60 plus years experience to teach us all.  Thank you to Mrs. Zettl for all the organizing, packing, editing, and mothering you do.  I love you both.

I also had the honor and pleasure of learning from Karen Rohlf (Dressage Naturally) at Michelle Donlick's Avalo Farm.  It was a great weekend.  Thank you to Karen for coming - and thank you to Michelle for hosting and loaning me De'Jeur (I think I spelled his name correctly)!

If anyone knows of any fundraiser ideas, I am still qualified to be invited to the selection trials next year for the 2012 Olympic Games. I have found a possible horse!!!!!!!  But the funds are still needed.  Let me know!  No idea is too small or too big!  I might be behind in available funds, but once they are there, I still intend to make that team!

Update

It's been quite a while since I've written, so I thought I'd give you guys some updates.

Equifit has this awesome product, ShouldersBack.  My shoulders tend to hutch forward because of all the time I have to spend in a wheelchair.  I've been using it and it is AWESOME!  You can find a ShouldersBack and other products HERE.

The pancake breakfast fundraiser had to be canceled for not enough interest.  We are currently working on a CT, a golf tournament, a spaghetti dinner, and a clinic with Colleen Kelly in February.  Contact me if you are interested in helping with any of these!

Lou is back from PA and is doing well.  I miss him so much.  He was such a sweetie.  Hopefully I can get out to see him in the next week or two.

I had to withdraw from Mexico for lack of funds.  The next competition is Portugal and I need to raise about $15,000 in about a week.  Anyone with any ideas of quick fundraising, let me know :)

Last week, for my birthday, Challenged Athletes Foundation paid for me to ride with Walter Zettl.  I always love learning from him. I rode at Houghton College in New York on a 23 year old horse named ET.  I was able to work again on my flying changes (needs LOTS of work from right to left and my hip tends to get stuck going that direction), canter pirohettes (they are improving a little), piaffe and passage. ET was a lovely partner and I enjoyed learning from Walter.  Thank you Challenged Athletes, Jo-Anne Young, Houghton College, ET, and especially Walter Zettl.  I have a small clip of some of my riding but need to get permission to post.

That's it for updates.  Next month will see if the funds come in for me to compete in Portugal (actually, the next week will tell that), I will audit the clinic Missy Ransehousen and Robert Dover are giving at Gladstone, clinic with Walter again possibly, train with Missy and Jessica Ransehousen.  December will be Portugal and continuing to raise funds and look for a horse.

Thank you all for your friendship and support!

No Mexico For Us

Wellllllllllllll, Lou is back home in his new digs at Heritage Hall, owned by Vicki Hall.  It's a wonderful place and she and the staff take great care of the horses there.  Sara Kinard, Lou's owner, is back from Germany... and my lease of the lovely Lou has come to an end.  I miss him already.

Just to update everyone, I was unable to raise the funds needed to compete in Mexico and have let them know I cannot compete this go round.  The definite entry is due by Friday, and with the little bit of bake sales I've been able to do, it's just not enough.  I will have to aim for Wellington in December - unless a miracle happens before Friday of this week.

Ya'll take care and I will update you soon!

No Nationals This Year

I have officially withdrawn myself and Lou from our nationals/3*.  I was both unable to raise the funds to continue on to the competition and felt that Lou's stamina would eventually affect his soundness and did not want to ask him to do all that and risk injury.  He was happy, but exhausted by the week before we were to leave for Saugerties from Blue Hill, and I felt it was too much to ask him to continue.  There will be another 3* in Wellington, FL in December which I will attend.

All was not lost though.  Lou and I have had an awesome time learning from Missy and Jessica Ransehousen and from Jean Luc Cornille.  Thank you to all the Blue Hill grooms, Missy, Jes, Jean Luc, Jean, JoAnne, Sue, Eadie, and Brewster for helping this be such a great learning time.

I'll let ya'll know when we come home!  Thank you for all your support, kind words, emails and support!  I love you all!

My Answer To Stress!

No, I don't have any drama llama going on in my life.  However, I am quite stressed about our upcoming nationals.  Not the competing part; just the financial part of raising the funds, the stress and responsibility of borrowing and transporting someone else's 4 legged boyfriend to PA, NY, PA and then home, raising funds, a hurricane possibly coming our direction while I am gone, raising funds, arranging for my mom and cats to be evacuated in my absence if necessary, raising funds.... You get the picture.

This is where the Drama Llama comes in.. Although no drama is going on, this song makes me laugh every time I hear and see it!

Enjoy!

(Sorry no pics!  My computer bit the dust and all my pictures were lost.  I'll be back to posting pics when I get a new computer!)

Star Gets A Massage!

Star Says, "Thank you for my massage!" to Amelia Main
The other day, Star got a massage from non other than Amelia Main.  Without me telling her before hand, she identified areas that I had had issues with when I rode Star before he broke his leg.  Star is owned by Beverly Rardin of Rardin Farm in Mount Pleasant, SC.  After the massage, he was more relaxed, had straighter self carriage, and was altogether happier and more relaxed.

If you wish to contact Amelia to massage your horse, you may reach her at ameliamail@hotmail.com .

Thank you, Amelia!!

Captain Lymington (Lou)

Babe of Ballisodare, owned by Michelle Donlick of Avalo Farm in Wagner, SC has not been competed this year yet as he is coming back from his injury.  For our nationals this year, he has to either qualify with one ride from another rider (Michelle) from a competition this year with an R or S judge, at or above my grade comparison, OR qualify with a Championship AND a freestyle score from me from one of our PE international judges.  I considered trying - and even competed him in a Championship test (receiving a qualifying score).  But after giving him his first real workout in a year, I felt it was not fair to push him to do all that in a two week time frame.  He is healing well, feels good, and I decided to forego that for now in hopes of possibly riding him next year, if that is what his owner decides she wants to do.

I've been riding another friend's horse this past week.  Sara Kinard is the trainer and runs Half Pass Farm and Stables in Ravenel, SC and has a horse named Lou.  He is 9 years old, a Holsteiner, and is currently between 3rd and 4th level.  Here is my 2nd ride on him.  We are playing around with some school figures and hoping to put together a freestyle.  It's sloppy, I know.  He's the biggest horse I've ever ridden.  I'm slowly learning to not look so sloppy and get him more over his back, forward and engaged.  Hoping it all comes together soon.

Thank you, Sara, Rob and Maggie!

Babe of Ballisodare

One of my friends, Michelle Donlick of Avalo Farm in Wagener, SC, has allowed me to ride her horse Babe of Ballisodare often since 2003.   Last year, he had an injury and is just now coming back into work.  Before his injury, he was Michelle's prelim eventer and a level 4/5 Parelli horse.  I was supposed to ride him at WindReach in Canada last year, but he was injured 2 weeks before we left.   The other day, I drove up to Wagener and we took him to an arena down the road from Avalo Farm.  This is that ride.  I did not ask him for more than he wanted to give and basically just allowed him to pick how much effort he was willing to offer.  This was a first-time-back, go-at-your-own-pace test.  He did beautifully, I think, for the first time in a year.  This test was turned in to our international para judges and was scored a 62.86.  Not too shabby for a first time back test.  Thank you to everyone for hauling, grooming, loaning arenas, encouraging and helping me that weekend!

Errr scratch that.  I've tried for 3 days to get it to upload and it will not.  Dang it all, lol.

Because that video does not load, here is another of me riding Babe for Walter Zettl 3 years ago.  This is part of our warmup, the video is grainy and jerky.  But you can see how nice of a mover BabeMan is here:

Michelle has lots of horses for sale so check her out!

Post and Courier Write Up at the Rardin Farm in Mount Pleasant, SC

Photo by Grace Beahm of the Charleston Post and Courier

Jeff Hartzell did THIS write up in the Post and Courier on Tuesday, 6/21/11 (Equestrian Jones Makes an Olympian Comeback).  Thank you, Jeff Hartzell!  The pictures are of a 23 year old horse I have been riding for about two years.  His name is Classic Star.  His owner is Beverly Rardin of Mount Pleasant, SC.

She contacted me a couple of years ago and asked if I'd like to start working with Star on dressage.  She knew he was getting up in years (although we did not know his exact age until we just found and updated his passport) and thought it might be better for him if he lowered him jump height and started doing more groundwork.  We do not know how much dressage training he has had, but he has obviously had some - albeit he hasn't done it for many years.  He's been doing hunter/jumpers for youth and young adults since around 2000.  He was getting better muscle tone for his 1/2 passes at the trot for me in an FEI frame and could do 3-4 steps of a 1/2 pass in an FEI frame before he would get tight and stiff and needed to be allowed to straighten or stretch.  He loved tempi changes and would do 2 tempi changes in a hunter/jumper frame when he was happy in his work.  I was hoping to be able to ride those tempi changes in an FEI dressage frame one day!  Oh! And when we received his passport, we discovered that the Starmeister was a Grand Prix jumper in his younger years!  Go Star man!

On a side note, Bev has bent over backwards to help me ride Star, to make it to WEG with another horse who was not even her own (Ollie), she has boarded Star at her own farm (Rardin Farm), paid for his vet bills and farrier bills - done anything and everything to help me reach my goals.  I can't say enough good things about her.

However, two weeks ago, Star decided it might be fun to kick the snot out of his stall wall and break the splint bone in his left hind.  Because of a previous, chronic injury to his left front, the decision was made to retire him at the young age of 23 years.  I am sure Beverly will see how he does, and it may be possible for me to ride him again, but for now, we all are looking into getting his leg healed and finding a retirement "job" that he will enjoy.   While he heals, the hunt is on to find another horse for me to partner with.

A very huge thank you to Nicole for helping me saddle and mount all those many times & to Beverly and Jamie Rardin  for allowing me to ride this special horse and bring his dressage prowess back to the forefront in his old age over several years.  It was an honor and a priviledge.

Thank you to Michelle Donlick/Avalo Farm and Dori Derr; Aiken, SC

A big huge thank you to Michelle Donlick, Dachia, and the whole Avalo Farm team for measuring arena sizes, filming, hauling me to a regulation arena, filming, saddling, unsaddling, hosing horses, helping me mount, etc, etc, etc.  You guys rock.

Another huge thank you to Dori Derr for allowing us to come and use your arena at a last moment's notice.

Thank you all.  I'd never be able to continue without the generosity and support of such wonderful friends!

Bubble Wrap Needed

Ok.  I've been told lately I need bubble wrap.  It might be true.  The above pic is one of MANY bruises I obtained while attempting to be a poptart (to be explained later in this post.)  Don't try this at home.

The past two months have been the most difficult physically since my horse accident in 2001 that put me in a wheelchair.  It started with strep throat.  This led to a sinus infection.  Not long after that, at a clinic with Jean Luc Cornille in Pennsylvania and while training with my coaches Missy and Jessica Ransehousen, I started having excruciating pain in my abdomen and fevers of 102-103.  I figured it was all related to the sinus infections, was pretty sure it wasn't strep again and kept going.  When I got home, my temp was still 102 - 103 and it WAS strep.  Despite antibiotics for strep, fevers continued, so I was referred to an infectious disease doctor.  My spleen was enlarged, my liver was enlarged, my platelets were 30 (very low), my liver enzymes were elevated, I had a virus that was diagnosed with lab work, as well as mono.  I have even less energy than usual, which is pretty low.

ANDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD that's not all.  Fast forward a couple of weeks - still tired at the slightest activity, but pushing forward with riding and training.  My wheelchair decided that the above stuff was not enough.  It has a mind of it's own sometimes.  Sooooooooo, I am attempting to go over a ledge of a horse's stall.  My wheels get stuck and then decide to rotate backwards instead of forward.  I fell backwards and got a pretty little goose egg and  a nice little concussion to go with all the above.

Next, one of the horses I've been riding decided it would be cool to kick his stall (a lovely habit of his when he gets frustrated) and break his splint bone in 3 places (we THINK this is what might have caused it).  I had just tracked down his passport, after it being lost for 11 years, had it reinstated for possibly competing him, and discovered that I've been riding a ex-Grand Prix jumper for the last two years.  He is now on stall rest and is being retired from competition.  I will do a whole post dedicated to him soon.

If that is not enough, let me tell you how I've now been dubbed "Poptart".   I'm at another barn, different than the above 2 barns, lol.  I am watching the leadrope of attached horse pretty well, I think.  But no, I get distracted by all the other beautiful horses and look away for an instant.  Somehow, in that brief moment of inattention, the lead rope gets wrapped around my wheelchair somewhere, said horse raises his head suddenly and forcefully -----------> my wheelchair and myself go flying upwards.  Somehow, in the air, I become airborne while my wheelchair falls to the ground.  The people who witnessed it said I looked like a poptart coming out of the toaster - complete with a ping noise.  Thus, the nickname, Poptart.

The above pic is one of many bruises, bone bruises, and one possible very small fx in my elbow.

I think I need to invest in bubble wrap. :(

Hunter Pace BBQ FundRaiser @Middleton Place

Middleton Place Stables/Hunt put on a trail ride and barbecue lunch benefit for the Grand Opening of their new trail complex yesterday.  The farm itself is 80 + acres with over 5,000 acres of trials for riding.  They are offering season passes for horse lovers to enjoy their trials.  Check them out!

I'd like to thank Middleton Place, Mark McElheney and Laura Ross for graciously including me in your fundraiser.  A very big hug and thank you to Amy Brewer for grabbing the reins and organizing this for us both.  Thank you!

I was honored and humbled by how many friends came out and supported the event.  It was lovely to watch you guys ride both in the field and as you went on the trails.  I saw old friends, made new friends.  Thank you all for coming!  I hope you had as much fun riding (and eating!) as I did watching you guys.  Oh, a very special thank you to Laura and Rusty Clark, who came and spent their anniversary riding horses on the trail!  Happy Anniversary to the Clark's!

Thank you to the people who cooked!  It was all delicious!  Gary and Russ cooked the barbecue (2 pigs).  Laura and Brandy made the banana pudding.  Trish made the cookies and brought the fruit.  Amy cooked the corn, baked beans, slaw and rolls.

I am going to do a separate blog post on the silent auction.  But for all who donated, THANK YOU!  To all who bid, THANK YOU.

A very HUGE thank you to all my wonderful friends, old and new, who are helping make my dream of competing for the US Team at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London possible!  I could not do it without you.  I am honored and humbled to call each of you friends.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Pictures of the 2010 Altech FEI World Equestrian Games

I have some wonderful friends from Kentucky, Dennis and Dana.  We were able to catch up a little at a local restaurant while I was in Lexington for the month of WEG.  Dennis was able to get away for a few hours one day and make it to the WEG to watch some of the para equestrians ride.  As we say goodbye to WEG and look forward to the 2012 Olympic Games, here are some pictures Dennis took during his visit.  I keep telling him he should be a professional photographer :D  Thank you, Dennis!  Enjoy!

Lesson with Bargain

I had a lesson on Tal-Shaya today.  It's not often that I get out to his barn.  His barn name is Bargain.  I BELIEVE he is 24 years young this year.    He is a Grand Prix dressage horse whom I take lessons on when the opportunity arises, which isn't very often lately!  It's been 9 months since I've been to the farm this go round.    He is owned by Susan Selvey (who owns and runs One Tempi Farm in Moncks Corner).  Susan is an FEI level coach.  She is also a judge.  She coaches through the FEI levels in dressage and works with lower level eventers and jumpers.

Anyway, I worked on relearning the piaffe/passage which I have only infrequently worked on since my injury 10 years ago.  Attached is a quick clip of that.  I'm not doing great, but it's a start.

Jean Luc Cornille Clinic - May 7 and 8, 2011

In May, I went to PA for a week. My awesome-sauce teammate, Becca, let me hole up on her couch for the whole week - bless her lil ole soul! I took a couple of lessons from Missy and Jessica Ransehousen. At the end of the week, Trudy allowed me to borrow her horse, JD, and take him to a clinic with Jean Luc Cornille. I've been wanting to clinic with him for a while. Jean Luc combines anatomy and physiology bio-mechanics of the horse along with the anatomy and physiologic bio-mechanics of the rider and teaches how to combine the two into a harmonious partnership. I came away with some helpful tools and hope to incorporate that into all my future riding.

A huge thank you to WHOA in Aiken, SC who funded this clinic for me with the remainder of the 2010 scholarship awarded to me from last year. Thank you WHOA!

Of course, unless someone comes with me and remembers to take pictures, I forget. I have no pics of me riding at this clinic, so I have posted one of Jean Luc that is readily available on the web.

You can find Jean Luc Cornille's website @: www.scienceofmotion.com

Dover Saddlery

Many thanks to Dover Saddlery for helping me create an awesome fleece cooler for Ollie (Fascination) after helping us qualify as an alternate for WEG and for qualifying me for selection trials for the 2012 Olympic Games. I hear he looks handsome in it, and because he gets cold so easily and lives in the north, fleece is perfect for him!

Thank you, Dover!

Deepest Sympathy

Jean Schlichte was the founder of WHOA in Aiken, SC (Women Helping Others Achieve). It was established in 2008 by several equestrian women who wanted to help other women equestrian women achieve their goals. In 2010, I was the recipient to that scholarship. It helped me as I trained as an alternate for WEG.

With great sadness, I announce the passing of Jean Schlichte and offer the Schlichte family, friends, and members of WHOA my deepest condolences.

WHOA (Women Helping Others Achieve); Aiken, SC

WHO is an organization of equestrian women from the Aiken, SC area who help other equestrian women achieve their goals. They were gracious enough to allow me to be a recipient of their generosity in 2010. I cannot thank them enough! They helped me train for WEG in the fall of last year. This year, the 2nd half of the award will help me begin preparing for the European Championships and ultimately for the 2012 Olympic Games.

You can find their website at www.whoa-aiken.net

Thank you WHOA!

Black Bottom Tack Shop in Ladson, SC has been established since 1989 and provides all ranges of tack and equipment for the horseman at affordable prices. They always go over and beyond the call of duty for anything needed. I have many friends who also shop there and have always heard nothing but great things about their tack shop! If they don't have it, they can get it for you. Check them out at: http://jeffreycrider.tripod.com/tack.html

Challenged Athletes Foundation

Challenged Athletes Foundation's offers financial support to athletes with disabilities. Last year, they awarded me a $1,000 scholarship so that I could train with Walter Zettl and so that I could meet some of the expenses in training for WEG. I have applied for a scholarship again this year to help train again. If you are a disabled athlete, they are a great resource. They are based in California and have expanded to Florida also.

The mission of CAF is: "to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. CAF believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life."

You can check out their website at: www.challengedathletes.org
